Breast lift

Lifting and reshaping breasts that have dropped or lost volume over time, after pregnancy or following weight loss. This surgery, also called mastopexy, can be done on its own or with an implant if volume is also needed.

The technique

What does it involve?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, corrects sagging of the breasts (breast ptosis). The excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped and the areola is moved higher, so the breast is firmer and better positioned.

The scar depends on the degree of sagging and how much excess skin there is. For mild sagging, a periareolar scar around the areola may be enough. For moderate sagging, a vertical scar is usually used: around the areola plus a line down to the inframammary fold. When the sagging is significant or there is a lot of excess skin, a horizontal scar along the fold is added, forming an inverted T.

If volume is also lacking, the lift can be combined with an implant or, in some cases, with your own fat. If there is enough volume, only your own tissue is used.

What does not change

A mastopexy leaves scars, although they usually fade over time. And the breasts continue to age: pregnancy, weight changes and the passing years can cause them to drop again to some extent.

Suitability

Who might it be suitable for?

When it may not be the best option

If you are planning a pregnancy, it is usually better to wait, because it can change the shape of the breasts again. Your weight should also be stable, and you should know that a mastopexy alone does not increase size: if you want more volume, an implant will need to be considered.

At your consultation, Dr Navarro will explain which type of lift suits your breasts and what scar you will have.

Before you decide

Your first consultation

The technique and the scar are chosen to suit your breasts, not the other way round. At your first consultation, Dr Navarro sees you personally and takes the time to understand what bothers you and what you would like to achieve.

01

Listening

What bothers you about the shape of your breasts, whether you would like more volume or the same, and whether you are planning a pregnancy.

02

Examination and measurements

The degree of sagging, the quality of the skin, the amount of breast tissue and the position of the areola relative to the inframammary fold.

03

Explanation

What type of lift and scar you need, whether an implant or your own fat should be added and what recovery will involve.

04

Deciding without pressure

You take the proposal home in writing, together with the quote and the risks. You can raise any questions before you decide.

On the day of surgery

The procedure, step by step

Beforehand

Preparation and marking

Pre-operative tests and an assessment by the anaesthetist. Before you go into theatre, with you standing, Dr Navarro marks the new position of the areola and the lines of the surgery.

Reshaping

Lifting the breast

Under general anaesthesia, the excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped to give the breast shape and projection, and the areola is raised.

If needed

Implant or fat

When the plan includes more volume, the implant is placed in the same operation or your own fat is grafted.

To finish

Closure and dressing

The incisions are closed with fine sutures and a dressing is applied, which is later replaced with a post-surgical bra.

Afterwards

Your recovery

Days 1 to 3

The most demanding days

Swelling and discomfort, which are controlled with the prescribed medication. You should avoid exertion and not lift anything heavy.

Around 48 hours

Post-surgical bra

The dressing is replaced with a non-wired bra, which you will wear for about a month.

Week 2

Back to your routine

Your scars are checked at a follow-up appointment. Many patients return to work that is not physically demanding after around two weeks.

Weeks 4 to 6

Easing back into exercise

You gradually return to exercise, as Dr Navarro advises.

6 to 12 months

Final result

The breasts settle and take on their final shape. The scars mature and fade over the first year or a little longer.

Important information

Risks you should know about

Like any surgery, a breast lift carries risks. Most are uncommon, but it is important to understand them before you decide:

There are also the risks associated with anaesthesia. Dr Navarro will go through them with you at your consultation, and they will be set out in the informed consent form.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the degree of sagging: around the areola for mild sagging, vertical for moderate sagging and an inverted T when there is a lot of excess skin. At your consultation, Dr Navarro will explain this for your specific case.

Only if, as well as lifting the breasts, you want more volume or the breasts have become very empty. If there is enough volume, only your own tissue is used.

In many cases, yes, in the same operation. In some situations Dr Navarro may recommend doing it in two stages to keep better control of the result.

This can be considered when a moderate increase is needed and you have fat in another area. Some of the fat is reabsorbed, so the volume it adds is more limited.

The breasts are higher and firmer, but they continue to age. Pregnancy, weight changes and the passing years can cause them to drop again to some extent.

In many cases, yes, because the areola stays connected to the breast tissue, but it is not possible to be certain in every case.

That is usually the most advisable approach, because a pregnancy can change the shape of the breasts again. If you are unsure, mention it at your consultation.

It depends on the technique and whether an implant or fat is added. You will receive a personalised quote after your first consultation.
